After modifying a 1st Generation Lexus GS300, we decided to try our hand with the
2nd Generation body style. The 2nd Generation GS300/400 was introduced in 1998,
and the clean lines have aged very well. In fact, Lexus still utilizes this
body type for its 2004 model, a departure from the normal 4-5yr design cycles
of Japanese cars. While searching for a vehicle, it was decided that Burnished
Desert Gold would be the color of choice, due to its rarity, and ability to
showcase aerodynamic modifications (darker hues tend to hide them). After 3months
of searching we found the perfect vehicle: |

This is what the car looked like when it was purchased in November of 2003. With a very clean
exterior, luxurious interior, powerful V8 motor and a roomy trunk, this car
is a great base to build upon with modifications. |

The first modification applied to the car was a set of aftermarket wheels. The choice
of wheel diameter, finish and tire sizing serves as a great “base”,
to help determine the suspension and aerodynamic modifications necessary to
complete the exterior. The specifications of the wheels are: 20x8.5" Dronell
CA-05 (JDM imported wheel), Chrome Finish, 2.5" lip, 255/35-20 Falken GRB
fk451 tires. These wheels are no longer available in the United States and are
very hard to find. They are also relatively light for a 20" cast wheel
weighing approximately 30lbs each. The new wheels provided a brilliant backdrop
for the car, but also highlighted its need for suspension modifications, as
the car felt very floaty and unsecured at highway speeds. |
| While researching suspension options for the car, detail cosmetic improvements were made in the form
of tinted windows (35% on side windows, 20% on rear windshield) and updated taillights. We also had
the amber turn signal portion taillight painted red for a cleaner, more uniform look.
After driving the car for approximately 2months with the factory suspension and 20" wheel package,
the drawbacks of the factory suspension system were easy to pinpoint. Although very comfortable,
the suspension was "floaty", and at various highway speeds, the car felt as if control could be
lost at anytime. These issues were remedied with a set of TEIN HA Coilovers with Electronic
Dampening Force Controller (EDFC). TEIN is a premier manufacturer of suspension components for a
variety of Japanese/European vehicles. The HA coilover is at the sportier end of the spectrum with
stiffer spring rates, sport valved struts, and lower height adjustment range. The EDFC unit allows
adjustment of the dampening rates front and rear from inside the cockpit via the electronic module.
This function proves particularly useful when transitioning from highway to inner city driving,
where the rougher streets can take a toll on lowered vehicles. The driving feel of the car was
altogether transformed. No longer an engine in need of a harness, the car is capable, controlled,
and balanced in the curves, and allows more speed to be carried through turns. To further improve
the dynamic performance, we also added BRADI cross-drilled and slotted front and rear rotors with
Axxis performance brake pads. Many sports car drivers have been surprised by this luxury sedan in
the twisties!

With the wheels and suspension sorted out, it was time to address the body of the GS400.
A very handsome car from the factory, we decided it needed "enhancement" to bring out its
full potential. Rather than purchase a "off the shelf" aerodynamic package, individual parts
were researched and combined to gain the overall effect desired. While many vehicles may seem
extroverted with aerodynamic modifications, our goal was set on creating the "Sports" model that
Lexus should have made available from the factory. The following components were used: TTE
Front lip Spoiler, L-TUNED Front Grille and Side skirts, L-SPORTLINE Rear Bumper with matching
Exhaust System, L-SPORTLINE Roof Spoiler, VEILSIDE Executive Rear Wing. Clear Corner lenses
replaced the factory amber units. Overall, the look is modified yet not overdone or tacky,
the initial response from the public has also been favorable! While the car was in for paint,
various engine pieces were painted to match the exterior of the vehicle. |

With the new aggressive lowering and aerodynamic pieces, it was time to broaden the stance of
the GS400. Large diameter wheels can get rather heavy in cast construction, and various plating
processes can add to that weight. It was determined that a 20" staggered, forged fitment was
necessary. We made a call to iFORGED Performance Alloys and ordered a set of iFORGED TECHNIK’s,
20x8.5fr / 20x10rr (2" fr, 3.45" rr lip), Hi-Polished finish, and clearance for a big brake kit.
These wheels weigh 26-27lbs each. In order to provide a large contact patch and a sturdy sidewall,
we paired the wheels with Nitto 555 tires, 245/35fr and 275/30-20 rr. We wanted to maintain a
lustrous wheel to compliment the Gold body color, but did not want to use chrome again
(it can actually detract from certain wheel styles due to the reflective nature of the finish).
The decision was made to use a High-Polished finish and the results are stunning. The wheels have
a warm glow that is not too flashy, and the rear lip gives the car the aggressive stance that was once missing. |
